Jocelyn Olson is a senior here at EHS. Olson is a part of the Eastmont chapter of FCCLA. In her free time, she enjoys being part of the EHS track and field team as well as cooking for loved ones, baking sweets, and enjoying the Wenatchee Valley.
Olson is the first FCCLA member to ever compete in the Culinary Arts Events as part of the Eastmont School District. After traveling to Spokane, spending March 5-8th, attending workshops, leadership conferences and competing for her first time, Olson placed first in the state competition against 22 other culinary competitors in Washington. In the competition, all the competitors received the same recipe and the same rubric to follow in order to create the desired outcome. In scoring, the judges watch, listen and ask questions about the process of completing all the requited components of the assigned dish. When asking about the dish she created, Olson states;
“In this extraordinary competition, the dish I created for the judges was a Pan Seared Chicken Breast with Garlic Green Beans and Confetti Rice. This dish brought many of my skills to the table, quite literally. I loved being able to demonstrate my skills in such a spectacular way.”
As a result of her golden title, she will now be heading to the FCCLA NLC (National Leadership Conference) from June 29th to July 3rd. That’s where Olson will be in Seattle, Washington along with two other spectacular females, competing once more, though this time Olson is competing for the national title.
“When this competition was brought to my attention, I had a choice between Baking and Pastry Arts or Culinary Arts. It was definitely a hard decision to make because both areas of skill have been in my family for centuries. Though, the decision had to be made. I chose Culinary Arts. The reason for this being my father. I have been at his side in the kitchen ever since I could stand. I love to watch him in the kitchen as he creates dishes with heart and culture. I chose to compete in Culinary arts to showcase my love for good food and even better culture. I love to cook because it’s a language that can intermix with all the divine cultures of the world. Food brings people together and I hope that with my skills I can bring people together and be the perfect homemaker in the future.”
Olson explains her love for cooking completely. She is a girl with heart, confidence, intelligence and skill. Congratulations to her as she continues to “spice it up” and continue to achieve greatness.
