On May 30, 2024 East Wenatchee City Council approved for construction on 3rd street by the high school to begin. They added a bike lane on either side of the street, diagonal parking spots for easier access, and bigger crosswalks. But some people have some concerns about it.
Emma Waters, a senior at EHS said, “I think it holds up a lot more traffic than they anticipated because they just cross the crosswalk whenever they want, and now when cars are turning they have to slam on their brakes. The kids think they can just go whenever they want because they think every car will stop for them.”
Some students don’t really have any complaints.
Clark Sims, a senior at EHS said, “ I think it could have been better. I guess along 3rd Street the lanes go out too far, so the lanes are smaller, which allows for a lot of congestion but otherwise no complaints.”
The new bike lanes made the lanes narrower. With the parking spaces on either side of the street, some worry that cars may be hit because the parking spots stick out too far. Another concern is that the yellow reflectors stick out and make it hard for cars to turn into the street.
English teacher, Mrs. Medrano added, “Overall, the street looks nice but I do worry about students crossing and driving safely. I think we all just need to be aware and paying attention.”
