When you’re done eating, you usually have something left over. Maybe a wrapper, a peel of a banana, or even an entire bag from eating fast food. What should you do with that leftover trash? Of course you would throw it away as you always should.
However, it seems that some students have trouble doing that and proceed to leave trash behind whenever lunch ends. Not even during lunch, but anytime of the day and anywhere in the school, you might see a milk carton, a random apple laying on the ground, or sometimes candy wrappers will be blowing in the wind and into the grass.
Why is this an issue? Well, first of all it gives a bad look to the school if we are leaving trash behind, it makes our school dirty and lazy. Another reason is that it’s not healthy for our environment to be leaving garbage on the ground as it could be potentially harmful. It’s not okay to be leaving wrappers or bags on the ground or hedges. Students know better, but why don’t they?
To get some answers, we asked a few students about this topic and if they picked up after themselves and or pick up others trash.
When asked if they leave trash, a simple “No” was said from the people we asked, which was around 4 people. It seems there are some people who are decent enough to clean up after themselves, but there are probably other people who would’ve said yes.
When asked if they personally think about why people leave trash behind, the responses were mixed.
Both Ryan Coons and Tate Townsend, EHS students, said the reason was because they are lazy.
Rylan Stevenson, EHS junior, said it was “because they could.”
It seems that the responses given were pertaining to the fact that some students are simply lazy and leave their trash where it is, which was the most likely reason that could’ve been expected. It could also be that some are unaware or accidently leave trash behind, though understandable, it still should be something that students should try not to do, either unintentionally or not. However there are some students who do see litter lying around, do they pick up after somebody else or leave it because it’s not theirs?
When asked about if they picked up after other people, the responses were also mixed.
Tate Townsend, ESH Junior, replied with “I don’t sometimes.”
Andrew Slater, also a ESH Junior, simply replied with “No.”
After getting those responses, it sounds like that some students don’t want to pick up after themselves or from other people, maybe don’t even care that there is trash laying around. Not every student is like this though, there are still some that do pick up litter around, and not to mention janitors, but why should we have to let them pick up after us? It doesn’t take much effort, it’s simply putting something in the trash and it isn’t a hard thing to do. Always pick up your trash, and don’t leave it for others to deal with.
