At Eastmont High School there are about 65 certified teachers on staff. Many teachers have different stories as to why they got into education. Some teachers were interviewed to give their thoughts.
Mr. Hepton, Animal Bio and Small Engines teacher, had to get his bachelor of science and agricultural education, do three to four months of student teaching, and then apply for jobs. He has been in education for nine years; six years as a full-time teacher and three years of subbing.
Mr. Hepton said he because a teacher “to make a difference in the youth of today.”
Mr. Howard went to Central Washington University in Ellensburg and had to have an industrial arts degree specializing in woodwork to be a Woodshop Teacher.
“There were a lot of teachers in my family that were a big part of it, and it would be fun to teach students about woodworking”
Mr. Howard has been teaching for 33 years and is retiring this year.
History teacher, Mr. Loomis, was working at Eddie Bower’s corporate office when he started working with high schoolers. His plans included going back to college and so he decided to become a teacher at 28.
“I love working with high schoolers and make a difference in kids’ lives, I had worked with kids at Interlake High School in Bellevue and I enjoyed it.”
New to EHS this year is Mrs. Mayfield who teaches Gourmet Foods. She also shared her thoughts on why she became a teacher.
“Because I did not have the best high school experience and I wanted to make school a place kids would want to come to and a teacher students could connect with and feel supported by.”
