It is no secret that the school district has been on a very tight budget. As the year carries on, select creative programs begin to worry about the future. Classes like choir, art, and other electives that aren’t core classes are always the first to be cut in times of financial stress. However, there are ways to save these programs.
If more people were to join classes like Choraliers/Troubadours (or mixed choir as it will be known next year), Jazz Choir, or Chamber Choir the district would be much less likely to continue to get rid of choir classes or the entire program.
Choir is a program anyone can find success, fulfillment, and friends in. Anyone can sing, and choir is the perfect place to find a community of people learning how to better their voices. For someone that is new to choir Troubadours or choraliers (EHS’s non-audition choirs) may be a great way to ease into choir. In Mixed Choir students learn the basics of reading music, developing vocal maturity when singing, and expanding your overall musical knowledge.
Isabela Orr, a senior and member of Choraliers, Chamber Choir, and Jazz Choir says “I love choir because of the community and my passion for singing. Everybody is so friendly and welcoming. When people have the same passion you feel more connected and safe.”
Chamber Choir is an audition choir open to juniors and seniors. The prospect of auditioning may be scary to many people but the process is actually very quick and simple. Brittany Stevens will pull an auditioning student and the student will then sing the national anthem, a song of their choice, and will repeat scales and random notes back to Mrs. Stevens. In Chamber Choir singers will learn more advanced music and perform more often than the non audition choirs. The schedule can be rigorous but is also very rewarding.
Mazey Cowan, EHS senior and member of Chamber Choir says “Chamber choir is a fun, silly, skill testing class where the work pays off not through tests but self-satisfaction from performing.”
Jazz Choir is EHS’s second audition choir (students can audition for Jazz Choir at the same time they audition for Chamber Choir) with only one requirement of being enrolled in at least one other choir class. In Jazz Choir students learn about how to perform jazz music. The class focuses on the more intricate forms of choral performance but the class is still very manageable and fun for many to be a part of.
Tia Turner, an EHS junior and member of Chamber Choir and Jazz Choir says, “Jazz choir has been a highlight of my year and pushed me farther than I thought I could go.”
Interested in joining? Go to the choir room for a packet! The packet has information on all the available choir classes and the auditioning process, however to sign up for the non-audition choir look for ‘Mixed Choir’ when signing up for classes.
With class registration coming up soon please consider joining the choir program. There is an amazing community of singers and opportunities for trips throughout the year.
