Lee Elementary’s Annual Make Your Own Gingerbread House Night
December 11, 2017
Once again, Lee Elementary hosted a night dedicated to making a gingerbread house on Friday, December 8th. The night was full of Christmas carols, sweet treats and a night of bonding for parents and children.
Upon entering the school gymnasium, the first thing you could hear was the sound of joy coming from kids who were seated with their parents at tables. Almost everyone had a smile on their face and laughter that seemed to grow by the minute. The second thing one could notice was the table of donations placed at the entrance of the school gym “… to help raise money for the school.” A small table had been set up with a small, silver chest that someone could slip any amount of money into so the school could raise money.
The sense of community was strong. A woman that had volunteered at this night’s events proudly stated “This school is a family, it’s not just a bunch of kids and teachers. We actually care about the students.” The care everyone had for each other could be seen at every corner of the delicious smelling school gym. Teachers, staff and the principal would walk around with smiles on their faces and compliment everyone’s different gingerbread houses.
Having sugar and children in one single place sounds like a recipe for disaster and it almost was. “It’s just to have fun on a Friday night… come inside and get dirty, let the kids get their hands dirty. Enjoy all their faces, their smiles, running around. There might be a little sugar involved in that… but just to see their faces and how they get into building something that eventually they’re going to eat. And sometimes it doesn’t even last until the end of the night because they’re already eating it. They build it and they eat it!” This night goes to show how much families are getting into the Christmas spirit that ties them all together and keeping the yummy tradition of gingerbread house making alive as Frosty the Snowman.
