Recently, the EHS principal sent out an email announcing that students’ vehicles will now get towed if they are parked in either the visitors’ parking section or the teachers’ parking lot. Personally, I believe this rule is a good thing as it will ensure that students park where they’re allowed to and ensure that visitors have a place to park their personal vehicles. It’s also worth mentioning that students shouldn’t have been parking their vehicles in the visitors’ parking spots to begin with. On the other hand, the teacher’s parking spot is a bit more controversial. I think it would be fair for students to park there, but only running start students, experienced drivers, and students who are willing to pay for parking. The real question is, what do students think about this new announcement, and what do they think that the EHS parking can improve in the near future?
I decided to interview my friend Marianna Avila-Sandoval, who is a running start student and only attends two periods at the high school. I asked Marianna, “Do you think it’s fair for EHS to tow students’ vehicles?” This is what she had to say:
“Yes and no. I don’t think students should park in areas they obviously shouldn’t park in (i.e., handicap and white lines), but I think it’s the school’s fault that the parking situation has gotten out of hand. Up by the park, the parking lines are not appropriately visible, therefore, making parking unsymmetrical, which makes the spots “unparkable” due to crowding. It’s also very far. The teachers’ lot is very spacious, but students can’t park in it, which doesn’t make sense because there are more students than teachers, so students obviously need it more.”
Personally, I believe Marianna speaks for most of the students with her statement. I believe that students should be able to park in the teacher’s parking spot, but only with the exception of implementing rules. Overall, the parking situation at EHS can definitely be improved by having students and the school cooperate with each other.
