Public spaces around Eastmont High School and the greater East Wenatchee area, including nearby parks such as Kenroy Park and recreational areas along the Apple Capital Recreation Loop Trail, have recently seen an increase in litter left behind by visitors. Plastic bottles, snack wrappers, and fast food containers are commonly found near benches, walking paths, and grassy areas.
Students and residents say the problem is becoming more noticeable, especially after weekends and busy afternoons. “You go to the park to hang out or relax, but sometimes there’s trash everywhere,” said one Eastmont High School student.
The issue is not limited to parks alone. Some students have also noticed litter around school grounds and nearby public spaces in East Wenatchee. Many believe the problem grows when more people gather, but not everyone takes responsibility for cleaning up after themselves. In response, some students and community members in the Wenatchee Valley have started small clean-up efforts. Groups meet after school or on weekends to pick up trash in local parks and along walking trails.
“We wanted to actually do something instead of just talking about it,” one student volunteer said. “Even small efforts make a difference if people stay consistent.”
Local efforts are supported by community maintenance teams, but some residents say more action is still needed. Suggestions include adding more trash and recycling bins in high-traffic areas and increasing awareness about keeping public spaces clean.
Despite the ongoing issue, many people remain hopeful that with stronger community involvement, places like Kenroy Park and the Apple Capital Loop Trail can stay clean and enjoyable for everyone in the area, including students from Eastmont High School.
