Recently, designer brands have become a topic of controversy, and today were going to talk about it. Specifically, how that affects teenagers. The idea of a certain brand name being printed on a shirt, making it more valuable, assigns worth with no real rhyme or reason. What are the subconscious effects of that? How does this affect people who can’t get expensive clothing? Let’s discuss this in more detail.
These brands often have no real value outside of a name; the design is usually mediocre or even just the name of the brand printed on a plain piece of fabric and nothing more. This places value on the reputation and name of clothes rather than the actual fashion appeal and quality of the clothes. The idea that something can be valuable just because a few people said so is a problem that can contribute to bullying and hatred of other people, especially in high school, when the people being influenced are teenagers.
Assigning status to what the tag of someone’s clothes says is damaging to everyone, making the ones who have it arrogant and causing them to mistreat others. And making those who don’t have it feel like less due to that mistreatment and a lack of status in their clothes. If an article of clothing is going to symbolize the status of an individual, then it should be directly related to one’s accomplishments. Like sports jerseys and letterman jackets. Something you earn for an achievement in life is something to brag about and should be celebrated. But celebrating a person because they wasted money on a belt buckle made from a mold of a certain logo, inflates egos for no reason.
