Eastmont’s ASL Club presented the 2026 Sign Idol performance on May 7th and 8th in our very own auditorium. This year’s theme for the performance was music through the decades, with costumes, choreography, and songs that created an atmosphere as if in that decade! Preparation for this year’s Sign Idol started early in the school year, in August, when planning was mostly done by ASL officers, presidency members, and Eastmont’s ASL teacher. Practices for participants in the performance began in February, months after the songs were decided and sets were chosen. Performers attended practices twice a week, up until two weeks before the show, when practice became an everyday occurrence. All of the participants put in the effort and time required to memorize signs, lip-sync to the music, execute the choreography, and bring this wonderful experience to our community, especially the deaf community. When asked the question: “What was your favorite performance?”, three of our Sign Idol performers answered.
“Thriller by Michael Jackson,” – Sofia Garcia Perez, a senior, ASL officer, and the lead in the Thriller performance.
“Can’t Touch This by M.C. Hammer” – Addison Edwards, an ASL member and lead in this performance.
“My favorite performance was Thriller, I played MJ’s girlfriend in it,” – Anne Nicolletta, a senior and ASL officer.
To join this amazing event, which has such a positive impact on our community and school, just attendance at practices is required for those who want background roles, while solos and duets require an audition form and an audition itself. It is a great experience to learn music in ASL, perform your talent for an audience, and become more involved in our community. If you choose not to audition, come watch these amazing participants perform their ASL talents on stage next year!
