Students around the world believe waking up before the sun every day is a struggle for them. But is it truly beneficial for students, or does it get in the way of their ability to learn? Many students believe the answer to that question is no, it is not beneficial, and it affects them. Students might experience sadness, anxiety, or even stress. Lack of sleep could affect the students’ health. School starting later could really change students’ lives and make them better. Many schools have made this change and been successful. They found ways to make it work, showing that their students’ health is their priority.
The debate over the school start times has been around for years, with arguments about the hours aligning with parents’ work schedules and the availability of time for sports, clubs, or any other after-school activities. However, a lot of research/studies, and what students have gone through, show that’s not exactly the best thing. The main problem for students is the amount of rest they get. “When I’m tired, I feel like I can’t concentrate,” shared a senior, who has been going through this for 4 years now. Studies back this up, starting later can mean better grades, fewer absences, and even fewer car accidents involving teens. “I think I would be doing better in school if I weren’t so stressed every day.” Sleep is essential for helping a student’s brain work well in the mornings. Plus, it can make teens feel happier and less stressed. They are more likely to be in a good mood and feel better overall.
Being at school well rested and in a good mood can benefit the teachers as well. Well-rested students are generally more attentive in class, making it easier for the teacher to manage their classrooms and not have to worry about any issues with the students. When students are less fatigued and more engaged, it can feel more positive in the classroom. This can lead to better teacher-student relationships. An environment where both students and teachers can create a stronger sense of community.
Is having a late start school day necessary? A junior responded, “it helps me have a good day of the week, actually being on time and feeling more confident and concentrated in school.” Starting school before 8 in the morning is not helpful for a lot of students. Although not all schools have a late start day, it is, or could be, helpful for students in many ways. They would be in a better mood throughout the day, attendance would be a lot better, and they would have healthier habits. Some students prefer to shower in the morning before going to school to start the day fresh, making them wake up extra early and feel more tired than when they don’t do that in the morning. “I don’t have time for a lot of stuff if I wake up at the time I supposedly get enough sleep”. Having more time to sleep in the morning would benefit students who have these routines.
Bottom line, a later school start time is a smart and beneficial idea. It would give the students the sleep they need to grow, learn, and be their best selves. There is time to help all students succeed by letting them get the rest they deserve.
