School starting an hour later, at 8:45, has been a talked-about subject for many years. There are good reasons for both sides of the argument, but there is no middle ground.
Our school has always started at 7:45 am and ended at 2:30 pm, this is so students can get a full day of work done and schools can meet the daily requirement by law of being open. Many students enjoy this because it leaves time for extracurricular activities after the school day has ended.
Many sports begin at 3:00 pm and end at 5:00 pm, while others extend past the set time. With the school day starting at 7:45, sports are able to end earlier, giving these student-athletes time after practice. This extra time goes to finishing homework, studying, eating, showering, ETC. These athletes are more likely to get a good night of rest and not stay up past an unreasonable hour. Clubs have roughly the same time expectancies and face the same situations as athletes.
For the rest of the students who do not participate in school sports or clubs, this time after school is dedicated to working and spending time with family and friends. Many students have jobs to work after school. With this set time schedule of school starting and ending, students will be able to pick up more shifts while still having time after to study and do schoolwork.
On the other hand, many students would much rather push the school day back an hour. This will increase the amount of sleep a student would get, making them less drowsy during school. There would be less sleeping in class and higher results on tests. Attendance rates may go up with fewer kids sleeping past their alarms and having extra time in the morning to get ready for school.
The downside is that student-athletes and students who have jobs will have less time to do their schoolwork. They will have to stay up later, defeating the purpose of having more time to sleep.
